People had been out in downtown Beirut and across Lebanon since October 17. Protests began following the government's plans to impose new taxes on tobacco, petrol and WhatsApp calls. The size and geographic reach of the protests have been unprecedented, overcoming the country’s traditional sectarian lines. Lebanese demand the resignation of all political leaders and an end to the sectarian system of governance.
Chanting "all of them means all" and "the people demand the fall of the regime," people say they won’t leave the streets until all their demands are met.
